Sylvia Louise Matthews (Sly) died August 18 at Providence Alaska Medical Center. She was 72. Sylvia was born December 17, 1941 in Martinez, CA. She spent her younger life in the San Francisco area, coming to Sitka in 1989 and in 1994 to Anchorage. Sylvia enjoyed listening to jazz, discussing mystery fiction with friends on the 4 Mystery Addicts email list, watching TV and movies with friends, playing pinochle, and trivia. She became friends with favorite authors, musicians, and actors. "No guilt, no regret" and "Oh wow!" ? these are the words that we who were with her on her last day of life will always remember, and always unpack and explain with joy to any who wish to know. Sylvia's last hours were spent in the company of her favorite music and the love of those who knew her both near and far. Sylvia was preceded in death by her grandparents Helen and Charles Packard, mother Elizabeth Corder, sister Shirley, and ex-husband and friend Charlie Joseph, Jr. She is survived by her sister Sharon of Oregon and brother David Masklyne of California; son and daughter-in-law Michael Andrew Erb and Bobi Rinehart of Anchorage and their children Marieka G. and Garland Grace; daughter Mary Catherine McPherson of Dana Point, CA, her son Vincent, and granddaughter Evie; daughter and son-in-law Laura Elizabeth and Randy A. Castillo of Sitka, their daughters Juliana Beth of Willits, CA and Randi Leigh of Sitka, and son Roger A. Ness of Sitka; her best friends Melissa S. Green and Angel Carter of Anchorage; and numerous friends from all over the world. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 22 at 3:00 PM at Lutheran Church of Hope, 1847 W Northern Lights Blvd, Anchorage.
