Ruth Marie Nickles, also affectionately known as Grandma Ruth, 91, passed away at All About Care #3 assisted living home, in Anchorage, Alaska, on March 13, 2015.

She was born on Nov. 20, 1923, in Baker, Idaho. She married Marion Odell Nickles on Dec. 26, 1940, and they lived in Pilot Rock, Oregon, raising three children. Ruth enjoyed working as a nurses aide at St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton, Oregon, for 12 years during that period of her life. After the kids were grown, Ruth and Marion moved to Roseburg, Oregon, and eventually enjoyed a retired lifestyle. Ruth was an avid volunteer, helping to make baby quilts and newborn layettes with a church ladies group. She and Marion also worked to distribute donated baked goods from bakeries to missions and soup kitchens in the Roseburg area during the 1980's. During Ruth's years in Oregon, she also had a passion for growing beautiful roses and other flowers, as well as making jewelry from beads. In Dec. 2007 Ruth moved to Anchorage to be nearer to family. She also lived at the Chugiak Senior Center from Dec. 2012 to June 2014. She enjoyed potlucks with friends, family gatherings for meals and holidays, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren in the local area.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Marion, and her sons Norman and Don. She is survived by her daughter Linda Ewers of Eagle River; granddaughters Melissa Ewers of Phoenix, Kelsey Phillips of Eagle River, Shannon Vannette of Hermiston, Oregon; grandsons Brad Ewers of Eagle River, Gary Nickles of Hermiston and David Ray-Nickles; and seven great- grandchildren. Ruth was always concerned about the welfare of others, and had a servant's heart to help others. She will be greatly missed.

A service will be held at a later time in Roseburg, Oregon,
