Obituary

Richard Wade Sheasley was born March 16, 1953 in Eugene, Oregon to Ruth and Wade Sheasley. He was the oldest of three children and is remembered now by his sister, Rebecca Hoskyn, and his brother, John Sheasley. Richard, or Dick as he usually introduced himself to others, played several sports at Meridian High School in Meridian, Idaho and was his senior class president and Salutatorian. He attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and graduated in 1975 with degrees in Economics and Environmental Science.

Dick moved to Alaska after graduating from college and worked as a pipeline inspector for Bechtel. He was married to Kelsey Chalker from 1981 to 2003. They were married in early spring in Tok, Alaska. They lived in Fairbanks and then later moved to Anchorage. Dick and Kelsey traveled extensively in Africa, where they climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and visited Eastern Russia years later. They welcomed their first daughter Robin Gail Sheasley into the world on December 24, 1989, and their second daughter Jennifer Ann Sheasley on November 6, 1995. Robin currently lives in Bellingham, Washington and is attending graduate school for Library Science at the University of Washington. Jenny lives in Anchorage and graduated from Scripps College in California earlier this year.

Dick will be remembered as a most kind and adventurous father, brother, and friend. He took his daughters on many travels around the United States and the world. He was a fan of taking off for long weekends with his family in their RV. They fished, camped, and hiked all over Alaska. Dick was also an avid supporter of and participant in athletics of all types. He watched his daughters play many sports and competed in orienteering meets, nordic ski races, triathlons, and the famed Mt. Marathon race 13 times. In recent years, he was a devoted Yogi, and would tell anyone who would listen about his favorite poses.
Dick worked as a real estate appraiser at the Appraisal Company of Alaska since 1995 but worked as an appraiser for nearly 40 years altogether. He greatly enjoyed the friendship of his coworkers and the freedom his job allowed. A lifelong Christian Scientist, Dick was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Anchorage for many years. He also served on the board of directors for Nine Star Education & Employment Services in a Anchorage.
Dick loved orienteering, photography, making jam and jelly, fishing and smoking salmon, mountaineering, playing board games, exploring new countries, and roaming around off-leash with his companion, Abbey the English Setter. Dick also loved cooking, gardening, and listening to his favorite tunes, which included (but are in no way limited to) Greg Brown, Neil Diamond, Gordon Lightfoot, America, The Moody Blues, and Hoyt Axton. Dick was a huge supporter of Native Alaskan artists around the state. He collected many amazing pieces over the years and believed in the importance of appreciating art on a cultural level. He also loved reading and sharing literature and poetry. One of his favorite authors was Robert Service.
Dick will be remembered for his warmth, booming laugh, and generosity to every person and animal he encountered. He was a most loving and supportive father and brother and an active member of the community. As a long-time patron of the arts, supporter of political campaigns, and backer for many charities in Alaska and the U.S., his philanthropic giving was widespread, and we ask that in lieu of flowers you donate to one of the following three organizations: Planned Parenthood, Anchorage Public Radio, or Trustees for Alaska. There will be a celebration of life for Dick on Saturday, November 17th at Kincaid Chalet in Anchorage from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Everyone is welcome. Please bring a potluck style food and your best story about a truly jolly man. All those who knew Dick are invited to attend.
