Richard graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences on May 31st, 1970 then pursued his dream to move to the last frontier where he earned a Master of Science in Biological Oceanography from University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1981. He worked as fisheries biologist for AK Department Fish and Game for 25 years; retired in 2000, then held a position with US Fish and Wildlife Alaska for 11 years.
