Mary E. Digney was born Dec. 13, 1922 in Waterbury Conn. to Wayne and Beatrice (Madden) Burns. Beatrice was a native County Kerry Ireland
Mary graduated from Drake Business School in New York City, NY as a Technical Secretary. in 1940. Served in U.S. Marine Corp in WWII (1943-1945) as a Control Tower Operator.
She worked in Yokohoma, Japan for five years as a civilian secretary at the military headquarters Japan and traveled extensively through-out Japan. Traveled the ALCAN to Alaska in October, 1955. Loved Alaska so much she never left. She worked as a secretary at Elmendorf, AFB for the Base Commander. Met and married Bill Digney from Glasgow, Scotland in 1967.
Retired from Elemendorf and opened The Mc Mac Shoppe in 1977. The first Celtic gift shop in Alaska. The McMac Shoppe was an iconic landmark especially on St Patrick’s Day.
Embracing Ireland, Scotland and Wales she brought back treasures for the shop. Along with her sister Kathleen Burns they operated the shop until retiring in 2004.
She was a life member in the Alaskan Scottish Club and a founding member of the Irish Club of Alaska.
She traveled extensively all her life throughout, Europe, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and Alaska by roads and plane.
She enjoyed life to the fullest. Loved entertaining and loved life in Alaska.
Mary is nearly a 50 year member of Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage AK and an active member of Legion of Mary.
She will be missed by nephews Paul Burns, Kevin Burns and niece Sheila Thompson. Additional family members in Alaska; Karon Burns, Stuart Burns, Lottie Gotsche, Spencer Burns, Finnegan Burns and Penelope Burns. Nephew Tom Burns of Denver, Niece Maureen Burns Waterbury, and other many nieces and nephews in Connecticut, New York & Texas.
A Funeral Mass be on April 14th at 2:30 P.M; prayers and rosary at 2 P.M. at Holy Family Cathedral, 811 W. 6th Ave Anchorage with reception following. Her cremated remains will be inurned at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery in Spring, 2018.
