Luz (Lucy) Celenia Rodriguez Vazquez passed away on February 11, 2015 at the age of 83 in Anchorage. She was born in Puerto Rico in 1931 to Luz M. Torres Montalvo and Prospero Rodriguez Carrasquillo. Lucy moved to New York as a girl and was raised in the Bronx where she attended high school. In 1950, she married Hector M. Vazquez and they lived in Manhattan and then moved to Puerto Rico with their son, Hector and daughter, Elizabeth (Liz). Several years later, they moved to Long Island, NY. Luz was a seamstress and was injured at work. She and her husband decided to move to a warmer climate and settled in Homestead, Florida and then Florida City, Florida.
Hector first operated a restaurant and then shoe shop. In all these endeavors Lucy was the sales force greeting customers, talking with all the locals and was well loved by all. They ran their business very successfully until hit by Hurricane Andrew, one the largest storms to reach the Florida mainland. They lost their home and business. For a while they were out of contact with family and their daughter enlisted the help of Congressman Don Young to help find them. They relocated to Lake Placid, Florida. There Hector farmed and Lucy took care of the family and dogs.
Seven years ago, Lucy moved to Alaska to be with her daughter and her granddaughter, Amelia. She was a great boon to her family wherever she was. She loved to cook and dance to Salsa music. Many may remember her as Cha Cha Lucy. She is survived by her husband, Hector Vazquez, Lake Placid, Florida; her son, Hector Vazquez, San Francisco, CA; daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Vazquez, Anchorage; her granddaughter, Amelia Luz Vazquez Davis, Anchorage and son-in-law, Mark Davis, Anchorage.
