Jonathan G. Hammond, 79, passed away on Jan. 19, 2020, in Palmer, Alaska. Jon was born in Boston, Mass., on April 15, 1940, to Helen Godwin Hammond and Joy Herbert Hammond. As the son of a pastor, Jon grew up in several towns in the Midwest and on the East Coast. At one point in his young life, because of a housing shortage, Jon and his family made their home in the choir loft of his dad's church.

Jon enlisted in the Army in 1959, with basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., and he eventually made his way to Fort Richardson in Alaska. After discharge from the Army, his first assignment was at the FAA site at Cape Yakataga, where he met his future wife, Carol. After Yakataga, Jon worked on the White Alice system at Clear as a communications Tech.

Jon was married to the former Carol Shaw in 1968. In the early 70s, he and Carol relocated to Atlanta, Ga., where he attended Georgia Tech. Then he returned to Alaska, and spent many years on the Slope with Arco, BP and GCI until retirement. He and Carol enjoyed many years in Palmer on Windy Hill, until Carol's death in 1998.

Jon was predeceased by his parents; his brother, David; and his wife, Carol. He is survived by his son, Jonny; granddaughter, Jayda; his brother, Ben; nieces, Stephanie, Jamie and Christie; and his longtime sweetheart, Pat Gray. Pat's family will also mourn their "Grandpa Jon."

There will be a memorial service at Bodenburg Butte Baptist Church, Mile 12.5 Old Glenn Highway in Palmer, from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020; Pastor Rick Beckers officiating. Please join us
