John F. Loopstra was born to Fred and Rena Loopstra in the back room of his parents' country store in Elphis, Colo., on March 13, 1927. He served with the Navy in WWII and later graduated from the University of Washington, where he studied meteorology. He started his career with the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1951. He worked in Umiat and Barrow, Alaska, and then moved back to Fairbanks where he met Maurine Spiers. They married in 1953. Work took them to Suitland, Md., in 1955, but the lure of Alaska brought them to Anchorage in 1957, where John worked as a meteorologist until retirement. John and Maurine had four daughters and they shared with them a love for camping, fishing and exploring nature and Alaska. The family spent years enjoying a cabin they built on Lynx Lake. John and Maurine were avid square dancers with Dudes and Dames for nearly 40 years. They enjoyed a lifetime of travel, taking their kids camping in Alaska and Hawaii. In retirement they had adventures to Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Europe. John was addicted to his ice cream and he was passionate about having a great lawn. He was a founding member of the YMCA in Anchorage and loved to swim and work out there. He enjoyed woodworking and was a Fabulous Mr. Fix-it. He was a wonderful husband and an amazing dad, granddad and friend. John died on Monday, April 27, 2015, in his home and surrounded by loving family. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Maurine; four daughters, Elaine, Carol, Diane and Janis; sons-in-law, Jim Beedle and Bryce Klug; grandkids, Tessa Beedle, Bryant and Grant Klug and Alysse and Robin Loopstra; his brother, Jim Loopstra; and nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank staff at VA Longterm Care for their expediency with getting dad into hospice so he could stay at home with us. We are also grateful for Providence Hospice staff for all of the compassion and care that they showed our whole family as we navigated through this difficult time. We will have an ice cream social to honor John's life on June 8, 2015. Let us know if you'll be in the neighborhood
