Obituary

After a long and colorful life, Helen Houston died peacefully at age 93 in Anchorage, Alaska August 23, 2014.
Born May 1, 1921 in Chappell, Nebraska to John and Jessie Richards, Helen Marie Richards was a spirited child. Her Nebraskan childhood was always her touchstone.. At Kearney State Teachers College during the early years of WWII, she met and married a handsome young officer, Clyde Coulter "Pat" Houston. The Houstons settled in Spokane, Washington where their three children were born. In 1961, the family moved to Anchorage, Alaska where Helen's teaching vocation evolved; she taught grade school, earned a masters in art education and became district Art Consultant. One of Helen's proudest achievements was her television series, "The Art Attic" shown in many Alaskan classrooms to inspire kids and teachers to discover and create art. Helen herself had a strong creative side; she recreated her suburban home as a light-filled, original sanctuary filled with treasures from her many travels. Helen advocated yoga, meditation, and vegetarianism. She loved Alaska and volunteered for the Anchorage Concert Association, Symphony, and KSKA. Helen was a loving and inspiring mother, and wonderful friend and mentor to many. A legendary correspondent, she was adept at making new friends while keeping the old. Helen inspired many a young artist, and was in turn cared for tenderly in later years by special friends, neighbors, and helpers from Home Instead and Marlow Manor. Her life will live on through those whose lives she touched. Helen is preceded in death by son Patrick Bruce, and brother John Boyd Richards II. She is survived by daughters Robin Jennings, Anchorage and Nancy (Larry) Eister, Vashon, WA, her grandchildren Zachary and Aaron Jennings, Leah, Justine , and Rowan Eister, as well as 6 great grandchildren. She will be buried in Chappell, Nebraska near her parents and brothers, as was her wish.
A celebration of Helen's life will be held in Anchorage this summer; for details email eisterisland@comcast.net.
