George was born in Ventspils, Latvia, and came to America with his parents after World War II. He became a citizen in 1955, and a lifelong staunch supporter of America's democracy. He worked as an electrical engineer after earning his BEE from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He returned to RPI to earn his Master of Science and PhD in management. Then he joined the faculty at Washington State University before coming to Anchorage Senior College in fall 1974.
After more than 40 years at University of Alaska Anchorage, Prof. Geistauts leaves a legacy of teaching, scholarship and service that is commensurate with the size of Alaska, his beloved adoptive home. George taught and mentored several generations of students. He was chair/director of the MBA program for 15 years. He championed the Alaska Native Organizational Management program. He chaired the University Honors Council. His research has influenced policy development in Alaska since the 1970s. In recognition of his service to UAA and Alaska, Prof. Geistauts received faculty emeritus status in 2016.
George's life will be celebrated with tributes and memories from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, in UAA's Rasmuson Hall 316. No UAA parking permit will be needed on Friday.
George generously gave to charities that were important to him or his friends. The world would be a better place if we all follow his example.
