Obituary

Anchorage, Alaska, resident David Skitt, 83, passed away in Anchorage on April 13, 2021.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2021, at The Dena'ina Center in downtown Anchorage.

Dave was born on March 21, 1938, in New York City, where he lived until he achieved his engineering degree and joined the Air Force. It was the Air Force that brought Dave to Alaska in 1960. He immediately found a love for skiing and joined the volunteer ski patrols, Hillberg and Denali, servicing Arctic Valley and Alyeska Resort. In 1976, the Sourdough Ski Patrol - now Alyeska Ski Patrol - was formed to exclusively service Alyeska Resort, where he continued his volunteer service until 2020, totaling 60 years of immeasurable service.

After the Air Force, Dave worked as an engineer for the Municipality of Anchorage in the water and wastewater department, where he played a key role in rebuilding the infrastructure of Anchorage after the 1964 earthquake. In the mid-70s, no doubt inspired by his ski patrol work, Dave changed careers and became a paramedic, also for the Municipality of Anchorage. Not one to stay idle, after retirement Dave worked for Alaska Regional Hospital as a flight paramedic.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Skitt.

He is survived by loving partner, Rose Feltz; son, Robert Skitt and wife Sheri of Anchorage; son, Bill Skitt of Seattle, Wash.; son, Alun Skitt and husband Courtney of Fort Worth, Texas; and daughter, Tricia Skitt of Anchorage. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dave's name to Challenge Alaska, challengealaska.org; or to Special Olympics Alaska, support.specialolympics.org/Alaska.

Dispatch to Patrol. The last skier is off the mountain and the mountain is clear. The duty day is over. Rest in peace, Dave. Your duty day is over.
