Obituary

Curtis Leroy Strand, 77, passed away December 4, 2018, surrounded by loved ones in Anchorage, Alaska.

Curtis was born on the family farm to Selmer and Marjorie (Stiles) Strand on May 7, 1941. He graduated from Hettinger High School in 1959 and went on to study Agriculture at NDSU. He spent much of his life farming and ranching in southwestern North Dakota, and he also spent periods living in Montana, Oregon and Alaska.
Curtis was a rancher at heart, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, racing snowmobiles, riding horses, roping, helping his neighbors and was active in his community. He returned to college and acquired a degree in Business Administration from DSU at the age of 65. He spent his retirement traveling between Alaska and Hawaii, where he made many great friends everywhere he went.
He leaves as his legacy his four children. Curtis married Betty Herberholz on November 11, 1961, and had two children: Todd (Deborah) Strand of Lafayette CO, and Tammy (Kurt) Obrigewitch of Dickinson ND. Curtis married Mavis Strand (Wolff) on April 24, 1976, and had two more children: Dawn (Jason) Helmowski of Casselton ND, and Sarah Strand of Anchorage AK. Curtis was a proud grandfather to six: Samantha Dvorak, Alexa (Warren) Thompson, Kyle Strand, Ali Strand, Grace Helmowski and Luke Helmowski. Curtis met his first great granddaughter, Amelia Thompson, this summer. He also leaves behind two siblings to cherish his memory, Julie (Paul) Richter of Rapid City SD, and Janet (Gerard) Magelky of Kadoka SD. His children remember him as a teacher, mentor, encourager, innovator and all-around great dad.
Curtis loved his family and friends, and wanted everyone to know he had a good life, and thank you for making his life happy, and that he will see you on the other side.
He was preceded in death by Selmer and Marjorie (parents), Gary (brother), and Kirk Magelky (nephew).
Memorial services will be held within the next year at some of his favorite places (ND, SD, AK and HI) and will be announced as they are arranged.
