Resided in Anchorage, Alaska

Carita was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Hans and Carita Strauch. She was the oldest of 12 siblings, with whom she maintained close relationships throughout her life. As a little girl, she worked at her father's drug store, which provided her with hundreds of fun stories, of hold-ups, and hard work, and gypsies, and ice cream fountains. During WWII she went to work for Army Payroll, where she became one of the first women to work on computers.

After the war, she met Edward Rowland, with whom she had a daughter and two sons. They lived in Baltimore, where Ed worked at the steel mill, and Carita raised their family. She was awarded lifetime membership with the PTA for her volunteer work, and was treasurer for her TOPS club. When Ed retired, they took up square dancing, and traveled the world by dancing on cruises. Carita skillfully sewed all their matching outfits. In 1996, they moved up to Alaska to be closer to their daughter and grand kids, Jenny and Alec Jemison. Carita and Ed made strong bonds with friends at the Anchorage senior center.

After Ed passed away in 2008, Carita and her granddaughter lived together, and shared breakfast and laughter every morning. Carita made beautiful greeting cards on her computer. She stayed active by playing bridge, eating lunch with her girlfriends, going to church, and spending time with her family. Carita taught us to all to value our friendships, which she did above all else. This unfiltered love for her friends was so evident in her last days, when her friends were with her at every moment, and took care of our family like we were their own.

Carita was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Edward Rowland; and her sisters, Cecilia Strauch and Marie Martin MacVanney. She is survived by her children, Tom (Karen) Rowland, Critter (Joe) Jemison, and Roy Rowland; grandchildren, Jenny Jemison, Erik Rowland, Alec Jemison and Mark Rowland; brothers, Joe (Rose Marie), John (Annette), Paul (Lynn), Bill (Sami) and Karl (Lee) and George Strauch; sisters, Peggy (Don) Jackson, Theresa (Ralph) Angelillo, and Ruth (Bill) Snodgrass; by her kitten, May Too, and all her wonderful friends in the Mighty Moose Bridge Club.

A memorial service will be held at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish on Carita's 93rd birthday, Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 3 p.m. Carita had a wonderful gift for storytelling. In lieu of flowers, please send a letter to her family telling your favorite story of Carita. Make any donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
