Steve was born on May 16, 1944 in Superior, NE to Duaine and C. Louise Eldred. He graduated from Red Cloud, NE high school in 1962 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE. In 1967 Steve was commissioned as an Ensign with the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating from Officer Candidate School in Yorktown, VA. That same year he married the love of his life, Barbarajean, and they promptly moved to Kodiak, AK where he was stationed for 2 years serving as an officer on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Citrus. Steve had many adventures traversing the seas around Alaska before being transferred to Cincinnati, OH where he directed the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 3 years. From 1971-1974 Steve worked for the State of Ohio in various positions including the Director of Fairs and Amusements, Export Director, Chief of the Bureau of Markets and lastly as the Assistant Director of Agriculture.
In 1977 Steve began a new chapter of his life when he received a Masters of Divinity from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH and started serving as a United Methodist pastor. Steve served as student pastor in Columbus, OH 1974-1977; as ordained pastor in Big Springs, NE 1977-1980; at Asbury and Pearl Memorial United Methodist churches in Omaha, NE 1980-1994; First United Methodist church in Plattsmouth, NE 1994-2001 and a few months in 2015; Willow United Methodist church, Willow, AK 2001-2010 and 2013-2014; North Star United Methodist church, Nikiski, AK 2011-2013. Steve was also actively involved with Habitat for Humanity in both Nebraska and Alaska and believed in faith in action.
Pastor Steve was a gentle man who loved ALL of God's people, from all races and economic stations. He was also loved in return by those to whom he ministered. He was a loving husband, a great father, and a caring friend. Steve was compassionate and able to unselfishly inspire people to believe in themselves. He enjoyed road trips, camping, tinkering in his wood shop, living off the grid in Willow, trading used cars, and fixing Saturday morning breakfast.
Steve is survived by his mother C. Louise Eldred Mountford, Lincoln, NE; wife of 49.5 years Barbarajean Eldred (Gochnour), Willow, AK; son Mark Eldred (Amy) and grandson Noah, Lincoln, NE; daughter Laura Eldred, Wasilla, AK; brother David Eldred (Connie), Plano, TX; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins as well as many, many friends.
