Ruth Alma (Roelofs) Adams passed away on April 19, 2017, in Anchorage, Alaska. She was 94 years old. Ruth was born in the farming community of Prinsburg, Minn. Her parents were Alexander Samuel Roelofs and Rena (Slaghter) Roelofs. She was the seventh of eight children. She graduated from high school in Clara City, Minn., and became one of the original "Rosy the Riveters" in California during World War II. There, she met her future husband, Bruce Adams. Ruth graduated from St. Barnabus School of Nursing in Minn. Ruth and Bruce were married in 1950. They drove the Alcan Highway to Anchorage in 1953, where they raised their four children. Ruth worked as a Registered Nurse for Providence Hospital.
In 1957, Bruce and Ruth began homesteading on Butterfly Lake, 35 miles north of Anchorage. The family moved to Monrovia, Liberia, in 1968, where Bruce worked for U.S.A.I.D. and Ruth worked as an RN at the U.S. embassy. They returned to Alaska in 1972, and Ruth worked at the Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center, and later at the 6th Avenue Jail.
After their retirement in 1986, Ruth and Bruce traveled throughout the United States in their RVs, with Bruce driving while Ruth would knit. Ruth enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports, especially basketball.
Ruth was predeceased by her son, Judge Samuel Adams, in 2004; and her husband, Bruce, in 2005. She is survived by her brother, Don Roelofs; and by her children, Mary Adams (grandchildren, Nicholas and Michael Laughlin and Benson Boulger); Susan and her husband, Allan Beiswenger (grandchildren, Elizabeth Shea, and David and Danny Beiswenger); daughter-in-law, Catherine Call (grandchildren, Helen Adams Smith, and Cameron and Margaret Adams); and Peter Adams (grandchildren, Taylor, Luke and Alex Adams). She is also survived by four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Butterfly Lake this summer, where her remains will be interred with those of her husband and son at the Whispering Pines remembrance site.
