Kathleen "Kathy" Ann Murphy's family and friends are sad to announce that Kathy passed away on March 26, 2017. Kathy was born to Donald and Arleta Murphy in Clinton, Iowa, on March 4, 1958. Kathy lived in Iowa most of her life. Kathy received her history degree from the University of Iowa in 1981. After receiving her law degree from Creighton University School of Law in 1985, Kathy moved to Petersburg, Alaska, where she became a member of the Alaska Bar Association and practiced law. Kathy moved to Unalaska where she worked as an Alaska State Magistrate Judge. Kathy then moved to the Anchorage area where she worked for the Alaska Public Defender Agency for many years representing criminal defendants and parents at trial and on appeal. In the late-2000s, Kathy opened her own law practice where she represented both parents and children.
Kathy was an avid dog lover. Kathy and her dogs participated in Alaska Kennel Club, Lure Coursing, and fly-ball competitions, winning many ribbons and accolades. Kathy was an avid lover of history and the U.S. Constitution which underpinned her life-long relationship with the Democratic Party. Kathy also supported many charity causes such as the ACLU and the SPCA.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents. Kathy is survived by her aunts and uncles Gary (Karen) Murphy, Shirley (Edward) Cooper, Judy Murphy, June Flaskerud, Lucille Link, Charlotte (Robert) Ortiz, and Everett( Marlene) Stone, as well as several cousins.
Kathy's life will be celebrated at the Whale's Tail at the Captain Cook Hotel on April 6, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. which includes a no host bar. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Anchorage Humane Society or the SPCA.
